We also support cultural heritage by publishing books to keep it alive. Two large prestigious works entitled Lost Occupations and Lost Fountains have been published as the first products of this idea. Evliya Çelebi’s Pilgrimage was created along with a documentary and photography exhibition of the same name, and was designed to provide a rich source of reference on this field. We also compiled Büyük Mecidiye Mosque and Ortaköy to keep the traces of history revealed after restoration work alive in people’s memories. Finally, in 2016 we added a children’s book entitled The Song of Birds to Kuveyt Türk Cultural Publications’ list of works.
Edited by Serkan Özburun and published in 2006, Lost Occupations contains information on dozens of occupations which have been lost since the days of the Ottoman Empire, along with engravings and colorful paintings. The book describes the crafts and craftsmen struggling to survive in the face of human beings’ limitless needs, along with the characteristics of the style of each era.
Lost Fountains was written by Gülşen Kılınçer and published in 2007. It attempts to introduce the stories of Istanbul’s fountains, which are a part of the architectural culture that comes with water, along with prominent examples, some of which have been lost, some of which have been destroyed and some of which have survived intact.
Evliya Çelebi’s Pilgrimage
Evliya Çelebi’s Pilgrimage was published in 2012 as part of a Hajj documentary project on the Seyahatname Volume 9, the most important work of the great Turkish traveler Evliya Çelebi.
Büyük Mecidiye Mosque and Ortaköy
Edited by Mehmet Baha Tanman, Büyük Mecidiye Mosque and Ortaköy was published in 2014 after restoration work on the mosque was completed. The book reveals the historical and cultural structure of a civilization by conveying information about the structures surrounding the Bosphorus. It has become an important reference work about architecture of the Ottoman era. This book, which takes a closer look at the architectural details of Büyük Mecidiye Mosque, acts as a social archive by also featuring the findings and documents that were revealed during the renovation works.
The Song of the Birds (Mantiq-ut-Tayr)
The children’s book The Song of the Birds adapted from Mantiq-ut-Tayr by Feridüddin Attar, a great sufi and powerful poet man of letters, is the latest book by Kuveyt Türk Cultural Publications. With this short storybook illustrated with miniatures, Kuveyt Türk aims to get children to fall in love with miniature art. Kuveyt Türk pays tribute to miniature artists with the hope that these cultural elements mingled in with text will extend children’s horizons.
